Italian citizenship for Sirine

Sirine Charaabi is an 18 year old boxing athlete living in San Prisco, Italy. Despite spending all her life in Italy since age 2, her citizenship is linked to her birthplace, Tunisia. It’s called “ius sanguinis”, and it means you’re not Italian unless your parents are Italian, even if you were born in Italy and you grew up there. In the case of Sirine though, the citizenship also means the possibility to participate in the boxe championships she’s been preparing for. Therefore, she asked the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to grant her the citizenship based on sports’ achievements, so as to be able not to miss the chance to participate in the upcoming European and world championships taking place in Sofia in July, and India in November.
